Erin Grant (played by Demi Moore) is a single mother who lost custody of her daughter due to an unstable job and income. Deeply loving her daughter, Erin does not want to leave her with her worthless ex-husband, Darrell Grant (played by Robert Patrick), and has to work as a stripper every night at a bar in Florida to fight for custody. One of her admirers is the lecherous Congressman David Dilbeck (played by Burt Reynolds). One night, Erin is harassed by a drunk. David intervenes and hits the drunk with a bottle. However, this scene is captured by one of Erin's admirers, revealing David's identity and leading to his malicious blackmail. Not long after, the blackmailer is murdered and his body is found in a pond. Detective Garcia (played by Armand Assante) is assigned to investigate the case. As the investigation unfolds, a series of unexpected events occur.
