Musician George (played by Gérard Depardieu) and garden enthusiast Brontë (played by Andie MacDowell) come together purely out of self-interest: George is from France and wants to obtain a U.S. green card to advance his career; Brontë has her eyes on an apartment but is told that only couples can move in. Thus, the two hit it off, each getting what they need, and soon after their marriage, they resume their separate lives. The U.S. Immigration Service becomes suspicious. They have seen many cases of fake marriages for a green card, and George and Brontë's marriage is no exception. A rigorous investigation intervenes in the lives of this "couple." Now, George and Brontë must plan a perfect romance and wedding process, creating all sorts of evidence that they live together. To make the marriage more believable, George even moves into Brontë's home, but the two gradually develop real feelings amidst the pretense.
