The story takes place during World War II, when the Nazis occupied France, and Paris became an occupied zone with scarce resources and rampant black market trading. One evening, a couple arrived at a small tavern, followed by a middle-aged strong man who also entered the establishment. The husband, Mark (portrayed by Bourvil), felt jealous of the conversation between his wife and the middle-aged man (played by Jean Gabin). In a fit of rage, he slapped his wife, causing her to leave, and the entire scene fell into silence. When the middle-aged man was about to leave, the husband stopped him and invited him to dinner. During dinner, they began reminiscing about the past when pork was available, and the conversation was both amusing and tinged with sadness. Upon learning that the middle-aged man was a painter, the husband misunderstood, as the same word in French refers to both a painter and a decorator. The husband revealed that he was a smuggler of pork and needed a partner to help him, primarily to transport pork from one end of Paris to the other in a suitcase during curfew for the next day's black market trading. The middle-aged man showed great interest, and they reached a consensus.
