A classic prison film based on a true story. The rebellious young Robert Stroud is sentenced to life in prison. One day, a sick little bird flies into his cell, and under his careful nurturing, he miraculously heals the bird. From then on, he diligently studies in prison, eventually becoming a world-renowned ornithologist. During this time, he must contend with his overly protective mother and the brutal warden, yet he remains steadfast in his ambitions. His legendary story is ultimately shared with the world through writer Tom Gaddis. Director John Frankenheimer interprets this fundamentally static story with a rigorous approach; although it lacks the tense and thrilling action typical of escape films, the atmosphere remains tight and moving. Burt Lancaster fully captures the protagonist's character and emotions, while his cellmate, Telly Savalas, also delivers a standout performance.
