Kent is the boss of Bartle Lake City in the American West. He falls under the control of the town's patrol due to a cheating card game, which also leads to the death of a man named Sheriff Cog. The city mayor conspires with Kent to create chaos in the town for their own gain, arranging for a man named Washington Tisdale to become the new sheriff, whom they believe will be easily controlled. However, they do not realize that Tisdale is actually an associate of the famous prosecutor Tom D'Astrie, who has powerful connections and can arrange for a stronger team to serve as Tisdale's deputy.
