In the 17th century, during the era of Louis XIV, a girl named Marquise (Sophie Marceau) from a dirty, chaotic town impresses the Molière troupe with a beautiful dance. She follows the troupe to Paris and begins to dream of becoming a famous actress. However, the path of an actress is not as smooth as she imagined; most of the time she can only play dull and foolish mute roles, and she has to resort to selling her body to earn opportunities to perform. Poet Racine (Lambert Wilson) and court nobles notice Marquise while watching a play, leading her to a chance to perform for King Louis XIV. This also allows her to get to know Racine, and the two gradually develop feelings for each other. Marquise begins to waver between the troupe and Racine, ultimately deciding to star in Racine's tragedy, which becomes a significant success and gains the king's favor.
