From Siberia to Tokyo, modeling agencies travel to the most remote corners of the earth to find girls willing to be models. This is the theme of the documentary "Girl Model," which presents a stark portrayal of the inhumane aspects of the industry. The documentary, "Girl Model," introduces a tightly-knit process in the entire modeling industry chain. Scouts prefer to go to impoverished villages in Siberia, targeting poor girls who aspire to fame, and then send them to Japan for training. If stars align, they are then "marketed" to the United States. It is reported that the current modeling industry chain favors younger models, with an increasing trend towards youth that somewhat destroys the fertile ground that originally nurtured models. Young, slender beauty that resembles underage girls is a target pursued by many scouts. "There is no age limit." Based on this principle, Ashley Arbaugh travels around the world recruiting newcomers. Along the way, she discovers Nadja, a 13-year-old girl from a remote village in Russia, who is sent to Japan to start her modeling career. The first step involves being scrutinized alongside other girls. Clad in lingerie, the girls stand in a room surrounded by mirrors, waiting in line to face the measuring tape and the "judgment" of the "judge." Girls like Nadja are usually very young and come from poor backgrounds. After signing contracts, they must work far from their hometowns in conditions that do not match their age. The documentary premiered at the Austin Film Festival in Texas. Just months prior, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) expressed support for age restrictions for models, while Marc Jacobs disregarded this, signing two underage runway models, one 14 and the other 15. One of the film's producers, Ashley Sabin, stated, "We hope that some organizations, like the Models Alliance, will watch our film and create a set of industry standards." He has publicly praised several leaders in the organization dedicated to winning better working conditions for models and added, "At the very least, we hope this sparks discussions about the lack of transparency in the industry."
