At a gathering for educated youth in Beijing, Wang Guoqing (played by Zhang Jingsheng) reunites with his first love, Liu Dongmei (played by Yan Xiaoping). The two once missed their chance at love due to various circumstances, and upon meeting again, Wang Guoqing learns that Liu Dongmei's husband has passed away. He then plans a self-driving tour called "Educated Youth Road" to fulfill the promise he made to Liu Dongmei all those years ago. Forty years ago, in a youth brigade in Beidahuang, Wang Guoqing and Liu Dongmei met for the first time and quickly became a couple admired by everyone.
