This is the second work directed by Pedro Almodóvar, with Antonio Banderas in a supporting role. The film again reflects the themes of carpe diem and sexual chaos, as Almodóvar unfolds the "sexual" theme that will be prevalent in his later works: sexual confusion, sexual perversion, homosexuality, incest, and so on. Regarding these themes that do not conform to moralism, Almodóvar adopts an ambiguous attitude of tolerance and even understanding, bestowing a twisted sense of beauty and sympathetic explanation on these "unsightly" actions. It is this ambiguity that aptly conveys the confusion and chaos of the Spanish people, freshly liberated from political and historical oppression. For Banderas, if the knee injury that thwarted his dream of becoming a football player was somewhat regrettable, then his unexpected rise to become a movie star is clearly fortunate. He was subsequently trained by the famous Spanish director Almodóvar into an excellent actor. From 1982 to 1990, he played leading roles in six of Almodóvar's films. From the 1982 film "Labyrinth of Passion," the 1983 "Law of Desire," the 1988 "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown," to the 1990 "Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!," Banderas has become an indispensable symbol of humanity in Almodóvar's films. He possesses a kind of "magnetism." Unlike Alain Delon’s magnetism, which is based on beauty, Banderas's magnetism is rustic, rich, and carries a hypnotic sensuality. His gaze encapsulates the most intense Spanish charm, explaining an excellent Spanish temperament and evoking the magic of genetics. Antonio provides us with the template of a "Latin lover." Generally, a Latin lover is slick and unrestrained, whereas Antonio is deep and sincere; his romantic flair is rich and enduring, carrying the power to fulfill love. Models like Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, the "American golden boys," lack this depth, as their methods of interpreting roles are always somewhat childish and superficial; on the contrary, Antonio can move even seasoned individuals through his inescapable "constraining beauty."
