The story takes place in the Changbai Mountain forest area during the 1940s. Logger Wei Dashan (played by Ning Cai) is paralyzed after being crushed by a tree while trying to save someone. His impoverished family situation quickly becomes dire, and the helpless Dashan seeks help from his apprentice Heita (played by Zhao Jun). He wishes to repay the single Heita in accordance with the local custom of “forming a bond,” which essentially means offering his wife to sleep with Heita in exchange. The kind-hearted Heita is willing to help his master find medical treatment and medicine but refuses to engage in such a sordid exchange. Heita's loyalty and honor touch Wei's wife, Yunfeng (played by Jiang Wenli), and she falls in love with this decent man. Years of being bedridden have severely damaged Dashan's male pride, causing his psyche to twist, leading him to continuously abuse Yunfeng.
