The story takes place in the Changbai Mountain forest area during the 1940s. Logger Wei Dashan (played by Ning Cai) is paralyzed after being crushed by a tree while trying to save someone. His impoverished family situation quickly becomes dire, and the helpless Dashan seeks help from his apprentice Heita (played by Zhao Jun).
