The opening film of the 33rd Toronto International Film Festival. Based on a true story from World War I, the film narrates the tragic fate of a couple during the shocking Battle of Passchendaele. The historical Battle of Passchendaele erupted on July 31, 1917, and lasted until November 6, featuring a prolonged stalemate between British and German forces. The British aimed to capture Passchendaele in Belgium to destroy the German submarine base located there, resulting in tremendous casualties—325,000 Allied soldiers and 260,000 German soldiers lost their lives in this brutal warfare, which ultimately ended with the British capturing Passchendaele. The film took two years to shoot.
