Sarah (Shirley MacLaine) is a nun traveling alone to the American West. Along the way, Sarah unfortunately encounters three robbers who attempt to harm her. In a life-threatening moment, cowboy Hogan (Clint Eastwood) appears and rescues Sarah from danger. Shocked and unsettled, Sarah decides to hire Hogan as her bodyguard to escort her to her destination. In return, she must provide Hogan with inside information about the French military garrison, which is exactly the information Hogan has been wanting. Initially, the two do not get along, but during their long and lonely journey, they gradually become closer. Hogan finds it puzzling that, as a nun, Sarah has no sense of her clerical duties; she drinks, smokes, swears, and has no taboos. This incongruity slowly transforms into a powerful attraction.
