The tramp Charlie (played by Charlie Chaplin) arrives in Alaska to prospect for gold. He encounters the fugitive Lawson in a small cabin, and soon after, gold seeker Jim bursts in and snatches Lawson's gun. When Lawson goes out to find food, he discovers Jim's gold mine and does not return to the cabin. Inside the cabin, a starving Charlie cooks his shoe to stave off hunger, while a delirious Jim imagines Charlie as a turkey and chases him. Suddenly, a bear breaks in, and the two together manage to kill the bear, after which they part ways to enjoy their feast. Jim discovers that Lawson has claimed his gold mine, leading to a confrontation where Lawson knocks him unconscious, but in his attempt to flee, Lawson falls into a deep ravine. Charlie encounters the dancer Georgia (played by Georgia Hale) in town, helping her escape the harassment of a wealthy man. When they meet again, Charlie invites her to dinner on New Year's Eve, but Georgia stands him up, leaving Charlie to perform a dance for her in his dreams. Jim, suffering from amnesia, reunites with Charlie in town and asks him to help find the gold mine. They return to the cabin but are blown off a cliff by a blizzard. When they wake up, they are delighted to find a gold mine nearby. Charlie and Jim successfully prospect for gold and encounter distressed Georgia on the boat back home. In front of the news reporters, Charlie shares an intimate embrace with Georgia.
