In a desolate village, skeletons of the dead occasionally appear. Scholar Wang Zifu accompanies his cousin, Captain Lü Zhi, to solve a case. Unexpectedly, they encounter a fox demon at an inn, who uses her beauty to extract men's essence. During a battle between Lü Zhi and the fox demon, Zifu falls in love with Miss Ying Ning at first sight. Due to the elusive nature of the fox demon and the lack of evidence, Zifu is wrongfully accused of being a murderer. While being escorted back to the county office by guards, Ying Ning rescues Zifu, hiding him in a cave while carrying her ghostly mother. Their feelings gradually deepen, and she dedicates herself to him. The murder case spreads to the county city, and the dismissed Lü Zhi invites a Taoist to capture the demon. Zhan Yi, who had his secretary stolen by the ghostly mother, swears to eliminate her. Zhan Yi follows Zifu to find the ghostly mother, but after a magical duel, she escapes once more. Ying Ning mistakenly believes that Zifu betrayed her, losing her heart and unleashing a killing spree. To see Ying Ning again, Zifu goes to the lengths of drugging his cousin and the Taoist. Ultimately, he moves Ying Ning's heart with his sincerity. Zhan Yi duels with the ghostly mother, who intends to use Zifu as leverage against him. Not wanting Zifu to be hurt, Ying Ning sacrifices her powers, and she and the ghostly mother perish together, bringing this tragic love story to a heartbreaking conclusion.
