As the brilliant sun sets, the curtain for New Year's Eve slowly rises. On a night that should be filled with hope and warmth, a group of people find themselves in distress. Times Square show host Morgan (played by Hilary Swank) is nervously preparing for the final rehearsal; Dorrit (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) is in a spat with her daughter Hailey (played by Abigail Breslin), who insists on spending New Year's Eve with her boyfriend; cartoonist Randy (played by Ashton Kutcher) is still wallowing in the frustration of being dumped by his ex-girlfriend, and the New Year's Eve only adds to his agitation; while poor Harris (played by Robert De Niro) is in the late stages of cancer, just hoping to see the Times Square New Year's ball drop one last time... They, like many New Yorkers troubled by life, are busy in their own little corners, too preoccupied to realize that the blessings of the New Year have quietly arrived...
