Two weeks before a presidential election in Washington, D.C., a shocking scandal involving the president's harassment of a minor breaks just at this critical moment, causing a huge uproar. With the media's extensive coverage, the president's chances for re-election become nearly nonexistent. In an effort to quell the storm, the president urgently summons his cunning political advisor, Dr. Conrad Brean (played by Robert De Niro). Skilled at manipulating public opinion, Brean quickly comes up with a "brilliant plan" at this crucial juncture. To divert public attention from the harassment scandal, Brean fabricates a fictitious patriotic war called the "Albanian War." To make this invented war credible, Brean personally visits the famous Hollywood producer Stanley Motts (played by Dustin Hoffman). Under their "seamless" direction, the public is easily convinced and pays increased attention. However, this so-called patriotic war soon reveals numerous flaws and collapses under scrutiny. This film is adapted from Larry Beinhart's novel "American Hero." It won the Silver Bear at the 48th Berlin International Film Festival in 1998 and received seven Oscar nominations, including Best Adapted Screenplay. Dustin Hoffman was nominated for Best Actor at the 70th Academy Awards for his role in this film.
