Cassius (played by Lakeith Stanfield) is a down-and-out young man with a strong sense of pride. He lives in his uncle's garage and works a dead-end job in telemarketing, while being four months behind on rent, leaving his future bleak. With encouragement from a colleague, Cassius discovers a trick to improve his sales performance: he disguises his voice as a white person, which slightly improves his situation at the company. When his colleagues start a strike due to racial discrimination and poor pay, Cassius mentally supports their rebellion, but what he truly cares about is whether he can use this opportunity to get promoted and make money. Ultimately, Cassius gets a promotion that leaves his rebellious colleagues behind, but as he rises in rank, he also touches the dark core of the company's secrets.
