The impoverished Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) steals bread to feed hungry children and is sentenced to 19 years of hard labor. After his release, in desperation, he steals silver from the bishop who sheltered him for the night and is caught by the police. The bishop claims the silver was a gift, preventing his arrest. The bishop's actions inspire him, and he assumes the name Madeleine, turning over a new leaf and striving for a better life. However, Inspector Javert (Russell Crowe), who has been pursuing him, is determined to find trouble for him. After learning of Fantine's (Anne Hathaway) tragic circumstances, he promises to care for her illegitimate daughter, Cosette (Amanda Seyfried). Eight years later, Cosette falls in love with the republican youth Marius (Eddie Redmayne), igniting a passionate uprising in Paris, where the unscrupulous innkeeper Thénardier (Sacha Baron Cohen) crosses his path again, and Javert, who has never given up on capturing him, reappears...
