David (Gunnar Björnstrand) and Marianne (Eva Dahlbeck) once had a passionate romance, but after marriage, the passage of time has dulled the sparks of passion between them. Fifteen years later, they have already separated, becoming the most familiar strangers to each other. David is a doctor who has developed feelings that go beyond the doctor-patient relationship with one of his patients. Meanwhile, Marianne is secretly involved with a man named Carl (Åke Grönberg), who is David's best friend. On her journey to Copenhagen, Marianne coincidentally encounters Carl and David, and this unusual trip deepens their understanding of each other.
