In the 1960s, Beijing educated youth Chen Zhen (played by Feng Shaofeng) and Yang Ke (played by Dou Xiao) arrived at the Eren Prairie in Inner Mongolia to work in a rural setting. They joined the production team of Mongolian herder Old Bilige (played by Bassen) and his daughter-in-law Gasima (played by Angani Ma), beginning several years of pastoral life. Through their interactions with a pack of wolves, Chen Zhen, filled with curiosity, gradually learns about these animals, and even considers raising a wolf cub himself. The Mongolian people revere wolves and love the grasslands, while the Han Chinese exploit the land for profit, leading to a "war" between wolves and humans. The production team, led by director Bao Shungui (played by Yin Zhusheng), eventually initiates a wolf extermination campaign, putting the relationship between wolves and humans on the brink of conflict... The relationship between nature and humanity also faces unprecedented challenges. The film is adapted from Jiang Rong's novel of the same name and took five years to complete.
