Kleinman (played by Woody Allen) lives in a small town as an unremarkable accountant. One night, he is awakened by his neighbors who want him to help catch a stranger who has killed multiple people in the town. But when he gets dressed and goes outside to join his neighbors in the hunt, he finds that they seem to have disappeared all at once. Meanwhile, a circus arrives in town, putting on a performance. Paul and Imy are two of the performers. After a brawl, Imy leaves the circus one night. Gradually, she discovers Kleinman huddled alone in a corner with a grim expression.
