In 1941 Shanghai, the Second Sino-Japanese War had already lasted four years. With the outbreak of the Pacific War and the entry of Britain and the United States into the conflict, the lives of Westerners in the Shanghai International Settlement experienced tremendous upheaval. Eleven-year-old Jamie was one of them. During the escape, Jamie got separated from his parents and met Americans Basie and Dr. Rawlins, nearly being sold by them. The three ended up in the Zhabei Concentration Camp. In the camp, Jamie understood the brutality of war, learned the survival philosophy of "doing anything for food," and met a Japanese boy who, like him, loved airplanes. However, deep down, he always yearned for the day he would reunite with his parents.
