The film tells a love story entangled in death and racial discrimination between the white male protagonist Hank (played by Billy Bob Thornton) and the black woman Lelia (played by Halle Berry) in a Southern town in the U.S. where racial prejudice is deeply rooted. Hank grows up in an extremely racially conservative white family, heavily influenced by his father. After his father retires, Hank takes over the responsibility of executing death sentences. Shortly after he executes a black death row inmate, Hank unexpectedly encounters his wife Lelia. Soon, the two fall in love. But in such a rigidly conservative racial environment, will their incredible fate intertwine like a passionate dance or will it be fraught with difficulties? The film's leading actress Halle Berry won the Best Actress award at the 74th Academy Awards (2002).
