Bestselling romance novelist Joan (Kathleen Turner) and her boyfriend Jack (Michael Douglas) originally planned to temporarily move to New York, but the romantically inclined Jack wants to change the plan and sail to Europe, which further causes Joan to doubt the authenticity of her life. At this moment, one of Joan's readers, the Egyptian tycoon Omar (Spiros Focás), invites her to his palace to write a biography and promotes his grand plan to unify the Nile tribes as an emperor. Jack, separated from Joan, is extremely frustrated and encounters his former colleague Rolf (Danny DeVito) and a failed assassin of Omar, the Nile native Talak (Paul David Magid), at a market, while his own boat mysteriously gets blown up.
