Lee Holloway (played by Maggie Gyllenhaal) lives in a dysfunctional family and has had "self-destructive" behavior since childhood. After spending some time in a mental health facility, she returns home and tries to reintegrate into a normal life. She learns typing and finds a job as a typist at a law firm. At first, Lee makes many mistakes in her typing, which her employer E. Edward Grey (played by James Spader) notices. Grey calls Lee into his office, and to help her remember her mistakes, he instructs her to bend over his desk and then begins to sexually abuse her with a whip. Over time, a peculiar bond forms between the two, which in a way alleviates Lee's "self-destructive" tendencies. Lee falls in love with Grey; however, Grey is embarrassed to let anyone know about his peculiarities, leading him to fire Lee. Lee's boyfriend Peter (played by Jeremy Davies) proposes to her, and she agrees, but on the day of the wedding, she escapes to Grey's office...
