Sam (Spencer Tracy) is a sports news reporter who has recently been angered by a woman, Tess (Katharine Hepburn), who is also a reporter. Tess always complains in her column about how boring sports are, while Sam counters her arguments in his own column. To prove the charm of sports, Sam and Tess agree to go to a baseball game. Unsurprisingly, after the game, Sam and Tess fall in love. However, their married life is far from smooth, as their vastly different personalities lead to frequent arguments over trivial matters. When Tess is named "Woman of the Year," Sam feels very jealous. Tess makes a series of efforts to cheer Sam up, but they all end in failure.
