Fanny (played by Barbra Streisand) is a poor girl born into the lower levels of society. Her difficult life has not extinguished her will to yearn for freedom. No matter how humble and hard her life may be, she firmly believes that one day she will rise to become a phoenix. All along, Fanny has been tirelessly honing her skills, hoping that someone will see her brilliance. Finally, the king of musicals, Ziegfeld (played by Walter Pidgeon), recognizes her potential to become a superstar. Under Ziegfeld's guidance and mentorship, Fanny eventually realizes her dream and becomes a shining star. However, success in her career does not bring her satisfaction, as emotional troubles continue to plague her, ultimately becoming a knot in her heart.
