Louis Zamperini (played by Jack O'Connell) is a long-distance runner who loves the sport and is fortunate to participate in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. In 1939, with the outbreak of World War II, the ambitious Zamperini joins the military to serve his country and becomes an Air Force bombardier. During a mission, an accident causes the plane he is flying to crash into the sea, and he and his comrades endure a grueling and long 47 days on a small life raft. However, when they are rescued, the nightmare is just beginning. Zamperini becomes a prisoner of war in enemy territory, held by Japan, where he meets an officer named Mutsuhiro Watanabe (played by Takamasa Ishihara). In the prison camp, Zamperini suffers inhuman torment and torture. Though he survives, this experience leaves indelible scars on his soul. The war ends, but Zamperini's nightmare does not.
