Four women married to four brothers share their marital situations while waiting for their husbands to come home for summer vacation. One argues with her husband due to an affair, another falls in love with an artist in Paris and has a child but refuses to marry, one tells a story about being trapped in an elevator with her husband, and the last one plans to run away with her lover. Bergman uses the form of a chamber drama to reveal the inner secrets of these women, yet the film emphasizes that this sharing does not lessen their pressure and pain. The sharing only leads to the exchange of suffering and even more unspoken secrets.
