Shijie (played by Jay Chou) is expelled from the kung fu school for getting into trouble outside. He is an abandoned baby and has never ventured outside the school. Although the school has a useless principal and eccentric master uncles, it is still a sanctuary for Shijie. On his first night of wandering outside, he catches the attention of Uncle Li (played by Eric Tsang) for his skill in throwing a soda can into a trash bin. Uncle Li, who is down on his luck but full of ideas, helps Shijie devise a plan to "search for his family through basketball," using Shijie's talent to earn money and gain fame. However, entering the basketball team requires permission from captain Ding Wei (played by Chen Bolin). Ding Wei's sister Lily is the girl Shijie has a crush on, but Lily has a crush on center player Xiao Lan. Shijie’s talent allows him to easily join the basketball team and lead them to the championship round of the university basketball tournament. As he is about to face his old rival Li Tian—once a comrade, now an enemy—Shijie realizes that Ding Wei's despair is not only because Li Tian stole his girlfriend but also because he has been defeated on the basketball court. This is not just a basketball battle, but a psychological one.
