Phil (Alan Rickman) is a hairstylist who runs a hair salon with his wife Sally (Natasha Richardson). They are the envy of everyone in the industry as an ideal couple. To everyone’s surprise, Sally leaves Phil, and not only that, she opens her own hair salon, becoming Phil's competitor. Heartbroken by his wife's betrayal, Phil falls into a deep depression and slowly forgets his dreams. One day, Phil learns that a national hairstyling competition is about to take place in his small town. After much internal struggle, he decides to pursue his dreams and return to the competition. Sally and Phil's old rival Ray (Bill Nighy) are also competing. After witnessing how others in the industry will go to great lengths to win, Phil and Sally realize that in order to win the competition and uphold the reputation and honor of their profession, they must join forces as they did in the past.
