Timoteo (played by Sergio Castellitto) is a surgeon. One day, during a heavy rainstorm, a speeding car hits his young daughter, leaving her in a coma after being rushed to the hospital. An anxious father keeps vigil by his daughter's side, but in his mind, the face of another woman begins to become increasingly clear. This woman is Ilaria (played by Penélope Cruz). On a similar rainy night, she approaches him to borrow a phone, and a strange chemical reaction occurs between them. Timoteo discovers that Ilaria easily stirs his sadistic desires, evident from the scars on her body that suggest he is not the only man with such feelings.
