Ben (played by Robert De Niro) is a struggling Hollywood producer who realizes he has made a huge mistake when he bets all his chips on the film he is producing. Caught between a powerful studio head and the irritable director Jerry (played by Michael Wincott), Ben is subjected to numerous unreasonable demands from a star agent, which only adds to his frustration. To make matters worse, the troubles are far from over. To alleviate the pressure on his marriage, Ben and his wife Kelly (played by Robin Wright) decide to separate, a decision intended to help mend their relationship but instead drives them further apart. Meanwhile, Ben's daughter Zoe (played by Kristen Stewart) seems to have an ambiguous relationship with the screenwriter Scott (played by Stanley Tucci), who, as far as Ben knows, is a complete womanizer.
