The American Mafia has deep roots and poses serious threats. To eradicate social ills, the police, after years of investigation and preparation, launched an offensive against the Lucchese family, one of the Five Families. Twenty family members, including New Jersey boss Jackie DiNorscio (played by Vin Diesel), were arrested and charged with 76 counts. Before the trial, the prosecution secretly negotiated with Jackie, offering him a choice: face up to 30 years in prison or become a witness for the state and testify against other family members.
Jackie preferred to go to prison rather than betray his partners. He refused to hire a lawyer and defended himself and the entire family alone...
The film is adapted from the longest criminal trial in U.S. history involving the Mafia, centering on the legendary 1980s gang leader Jackie DiNorscio. The plot and dialogue are drawn from court records filed 18 years ago. Due to the complexity of the case and the number of people involved, the trial lasted for 21 months and set multiple records: 20 defendants were paired with 20 defense attorneys, eight juries alternated, and there was an unprecedentedly lengthy closing argument (one attorney's closing argument lasted five days).
