Adapted from the novel of the same name by Irish author Sebastian Barry, it tells the story of a woman named Roseann McNulty and her life experiences. Roseann has lived in a psychiatric hospital for over 40 years, documenting her life in the hospital and the secret reasons that led to her admission in her diary. As the hospital faces demolition, a doctor named Green begins to assess her to determine if she can return to society but in the process discovers her real life, realizing that despite her suffering from the ravages of war, she still holds onto hope and courage, believing in love. Ultimately, her life finds fulfillment in another form. The film reveals an unknown chapter of Irish history through her manuscript, reflecting the author's thoughts on the Irish War of Independence and the Church's control and indoctrination of women.
