In a certain year during the Ming Dynasty under Emperor Wanli, eunuchs held power, the Secret Police were rampant, and with natural disasters recurring, the common people lived in dire straits. Original constable Wen Hao (played by Wu Yue) was driven by a strong sense of justice, detesting the court's incompetence, and unwilling to continue as the court's lackey against the people. Therefore, he resigned from his position and roamed the jianghu, eliminating evil and promoting good, becoming a true hero known far and wide. The common folk revered him, while the officials regarded him as a threat and sought his quick demise. Wen Hao always masked his face during his acts and used darts marked with a red peony, earning him the nickname "Red Peony." After a three-year absence, Red Peony returned to Zhongzhou City and encountered Zeng Shan (played by Zhang Hejun) and his son Da Wu (played by Shi Lin) leading a group of disaster victims to demand grain from Boss Chen's Zhongyu Grain Depot. Boss Chen (played by Shu Changqing), bolstered by the support of the officials, arrogantly refused to open the granary and ordered his guards to attack the people. Red Peony intervened, successfully coercing Boss Chen to open the granary. That night, Red Peony visited the Zeng family and took the list of wealthy gentry compiled by Zeng Shan, sending out messages to each household demanding that they provide money and grain to aid the relief efforts for the suffering populace, including the county magistrate of Zhongzhou (played by Wen Qian) who was also not spared. Just when the magistrate and the gentry were at a loss, Dongchang’s Eunuch Zhu (played by Liu Changsheng) arrived in Zhongzhou, and everyone believed they would finally receive help. The cunning Eunuch Zhu planned to use a "substitution trick" to transfer the money and grain and replace them with fakes. On one hand, he captured Red Peony, while on the other, he kept the funds supplied by the wealthy gentry for himself. By the time Zeng Shan and others realized the trap, chaos erupted at the barracks, and the four formidable experts known as "Chih, Mei, Wang, and Liang" surrounded Red Peony and Da Wu, leaving them no chance to breathe. Zeng Shan tragically died at the hands of the “Chih, Mei, Wang, and Liang” while trying to save them. Zeng Shan's daughter Ci Jun (played by Niu Mengyao) could not contain her grief over her father's death and harbored resentment towards Red Peony; however, after Da Wu explained things to her, she gradually came to accept Red Peony’s actions. To escape pursuit, the three fled the Zeng family and took refuge in a mountain deity temple to heal their wounds. Learning the location of the treasury, Red Peony planned to steal grain, only to find that Eunuch Zhu had set a trap waiting for him. Thus, another fierce battle erupted in the treasury filled with money and grain...
