During the colonial era of Spanish rule in South America, oppressive taxes left the people in dire straits. The new governor, Miguel, is killed on his way to take office, and before dying, he hands the official seal to his friend, "Europe's greatest swordsman" Don Diego (played by Alain Delon), entrusting him to carry on his legacy. Three months later, the new governor suddenly appears, but he seems to be a debauched nobleman, letting others handle all affairs.
