In Warsaw, Poland, there is a theater troupe featuring an actor named Bronski (played by Tom Dugan), who is exceptionally skilled at impersonating German Nazi leader Hitler. Maria Tura (Carole Lombard) and Joseph Tura (Jack Benny) are a married couple in the troupe, which is currently performing "Hamlet." During a break in the performance, Maria receives a bouquet of flowers from a young pilot, Stanislav Sobinski (Robert Stack). While Joseph recites the famous line "to be or not to be" on stage, she arranges for Sobinski to come backstage, leading to the emergence of mutual feelings. However, soon after, the Nazis invade Poland, and Sobinski must go off to fight. The leader of Sobinski's unit is Professor Siletsky, and Sobinski wants Siletsky to deliver a letter to Maria, but Siletsky doesn't even recognize the famous actress Maria, causing Sobinski to become suspicious of him. Sobinski returns to Warsaw to track Siletsky. Meanwhile, Maria is taken to see Siletsky by two Nazi soldiers, who also become infatuated with her, hoping to make her a spy for the Nazis in Poland. Maria makes an excuse to escape home but unexpectedly encounters Sobinski and her husband Joseph there. How will this love triangle resolve, and how will they work together to resist the Nazis?
