Bernie (played by Jack Black) is a mortician in the small Texas town of Carthage. He is highly skilled, kind-hearted, generous, and actively participates in community service, sings at church, and performs with the local theater troupe, winning the affection of everyone in town. However, he remains single, leading some to speculate that he either embraces a life of singlehood or is gay. After the death of a wealthy local businessman, the eccentric and widely disliked elderly widow Margery (played by Shirley MacLaine) is left behind. Following his principle of "giving every family the most sincere sympathy and kindness," Bernie eagerly approaches Margery and quickly wins her over. She takes on all the expenses for their outings, allows Bernie to manage her finances, and even alters her will for him. Two years pass, and the beloved Bernie has nearly become Margery's personal property; she dismisses all her staff and delegates all her daily affairs to him. The good-natured Bernie eventually has a breaking point, leading him to end Margery's life and stage a performance of "Margery had a stroke." He holds onto this secret, trying to evade legal repercussions... This film is based on a true story that took place in Texas.
