To everyone, Tom (Jason Segel) and Violet (Emily Blunt) are a perfect match. After a year of a love sprint, they both believe they know each other better than anyone else in the world, and they become engaged in a flash. Violet desires a perfect family but also hopes to have her own career. She receives a dream job offer from the University of Michigan, but it requires Tom to give up his current job and relocate to Michigan together. Tom agrees, but life in Michigan is not as good as he imagined. On one hand, despite his strong professional skills, he can only find a barely-sustaining job at a snack bar. On the other hand, Violet is continually succeeding in her career, causing a growing distance between them.
