Two "innocent" criminals have just arrived at the Orleans prison: Zack (played by Tom Waits) and Jack (played by John Lurie). Zack, a DJ, wanders the streets after being dumped by his girlfriend and takes a friend's job: to drive a car to a certain location. On the way, he gets pulled over by the police and finds a corpse in the back seat; meanwhile, Jack is persuaded by an old friend to meet a young and beautiful prostitute, just as he is about to enjoy himself, the police burst in and take him away. Soon, another Italian murderer, Bob (played by Roberto Benigni), arrives at the prison. The three of them cause quite a few laughs in their cell. Bored, they plan to escape and actually succeed. The trio trudges through swamps and woods, arriving at a small cabin belonging to an Italian woman, Nicoletta (played by Nicoletta Braschi). Bob and Nicoletta, the two Italians, are immersed in love, leaving only Jack and Zack to continue on their journey, while the two must decide where to go at a crossroads... The film is directed by American independent filmmaker Jim Jarmusch and is in black and white, having participated in the 1986 Cannes Film Festival.
