A celestial being falls in love with a mortal, which was inherently forbidden. However, the Third Holy Mother (voiced by Xu Fan) in the Heavenly Palace is determined to love the scholar Liu Yanchang in the mortal world. Ignoring the objections of Erlang Shen (voiced by Jiang Wen), the Third Holy Mother secretly takes the magical Lotus Lantern to the mortal realm to pledge her love and gives birth to a son named Chenxiang. The peaceful and happy seven years soon pass. One day, Erlang Shen descends to the mortal realm and threatens the Third Holy Mother with little Chenxiang, demanding she hand over the Lotus Lantern, ultimately trapping her under Mount Hua. A beautiful family is thus shattered. Chenxiang learns about his lineage from the Earth God, and in order to reclaim the Lotus Lantern and rescue his mother, he embarks on a difficult journey to find her. After years of trials, Chenxiang grows into a brave young man and, with the guidance of Sun Wukong (voiced by Chen Peisi), acquires a divine axe. Eventually, the Lotus Lantern and Chenxiang merge into one, defeating Erlang Shen, splitting Mount Hua, and rescuing his mother.
