Steve Coogan, known for "Greed" and "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent," has confirmed his role in the BBC1 drama "The Reckoning," tackling a controversial "scandal-type" story. Since its development was confirmed in October 2020, this project has faced skepticism, but now with Steve's lead confirmation, the series is still on track. The series focuses on the story of Jimmy Savile, a television personality who was a pioneering DJ and a veteran music show host, enjoying many achievements and acclaim, including being awarded an OBE. However, after his death at the age of 84 in 2011, an investigation sparked by a 2012 documentary revealed a darker truth: he had engaged in inappropriate conduct with minors since the 1960s. The BBC's complicity and the prevailing toxic culture of the time allowed him to act with impunity, reaching out to more young women and even a 75-year-old with a mental disability; over 450 complaints and reports regarding his behavior were filed. An investigation in 2016 revealed that 11 of the victims were younger than 12. Jeff Pope, who worked with Steve on "Stan & Ollie" and serves as the writer and creator of this series, believes this is a story worth retelling. It addresses not only the wrongdoing but also examines why Jimmy was allowed to continue unchallenged during his life. The BBC's drama department also emphasized the significance of this adaptation, stating it would provide an opportunity for reflection and allow more voices to be heard.
