During the French Revolution, the legendary hero "The Black Tulip" (played by Alain Delon) robs the rich to help the poor, leaving the nobility in constant fear. "The Black Tulip" appears masked, and his true identity is actually Count Guillaume, whose actions under the guise of helping the people are driven by his own selfish desires. The police chief sets a trap to draw him out, and in the ensuing struggle, he is wounded on his left cheek, leaving a scar that becomes strong evidence for capturing "The Black Tulip." A citywide manhunt ensues. To avoid exposure, Count Guillaume is forced to enlist his twin brother Julian (also played by Alain Delon) to take his place at a political meeting. Julian despises his brother’s actions and decides to step up in the name of "The Black Tulip," fighting alongside the people. However, during one battle, Julian is captured and finds himself in a dire situation. Count Guillaume finally has a change of heart and risks his life to rescue him, but unfortunately, he is also captured. Just as Count Guillaume is about to be executed, "The Black Tulip" reappears, creating a heroic myth of justice.
