The ferocity and mystery of tornadoes have drawn many scientists to conduct in-depth research. Venturing into the heart of a storm is the most dangerous act, yet it is also the most effective way to explore tornadoes. Joe (played by Helen Hunt) and her ex-husband Bill (played by Bill Paxton) are the type of "storm chasers" who, despite their broken relationship and Bill having a new girlfriend, decide to pursue a hurricane in Oklahoma out of their obsession with tornado research. They plan to deploy their newly developed device "Dorothy" into the center of a tornado to collect data. They drive an old truck, leading the storm-chasing team towards the most dangerous areas. Meanwhile, another well-equipped team is also heading in the same direction, led by Jonas (played by Cary Elwes), who competes with Joe in the storm-chasing endeavor. With the like-minded Joe on one side and his fear of an adventurous lifestyle represented by his new girlfriend on the other, how will Bill choose his emotional path during the chase? More importantly, facing a powerful rival and the ever-present danger of being caught in a tornado, how will Joe and Bill achieve their storm-chasing dreams?
