The story takes place in a fictional kingdom in medieval Europe, where a young empress (Thora Birch) ascends to the throne with the intention of creating an egalitarian society without classes. This decision clearly threatens the evil wizard Profion (Jeremy Irons), who decides to eliminate the empress at all costs. To protect her throne, the empress assembles an adventuring party dedicated to her cause, setting off to find the legendary Dragon Staff, which endows its wielder with supreme power and is the only means to thwart Profion's schemes. The news of the staff expedition quickly reaches Profion, and he cannot possibly stand idle. Soon, Profion selects a team of elite warriors from his followers.
