The film is based on the true story of "The King of Dogs in Northwest China." In the Tianshan Forest Farm of Northwest China, forest ranger Zhu Guangsheng (played by Huang Hong) raises brave wolf dogs to prevent timber theft and poaching, exhausting his family fortune, and struggling through hardships. A stray puppy (played by Hali) accidentally enters Old Zhu's life, and he names it "Lanbo," beginning to train it as a forest dog. The highly intelligent Lanbo quickly becomes a great helper for Old Zhu. After Zhang Biao (played by Liu Xiangjing), who was imprisoned for reporting his poaching of wild wolves, is released, he seeks revenge on Old Zhu, constantly threatening the safety of Old Zhu's two daughters and Lanbo.
