The Hulu 6-episode limited series "Catch-22" is set to premiere all at once on May 17 in the U.S. The series is produced by Paramount Television and Anonymous Content, based on the novel of the same name by Joseph Heller, with George Clooney, Grant Heslov, and Ellen Kuras each directing two episodes. The limited series is written by Luke Davies and David Michôd, telling the story of the protagonist Yossarian (played by Christopher Abbott) in Italy during World War II, where Colonel Cathcart (played by Kyle Chandler, originally intended to be played by George Clooney) forces his subordinates to undertake dangerous flying missions due to his personal issues. Yossarian initially wants to pretend to be insane to avoid the missions, but he is informed that the military's so-called Catch-22 states that while madmen can be exempt from flying, they must apply for it themselves. However, the act of "applying" contradicts itself as it proves the applicant is rational and does not want to die, thus they are not considered insane, rendering the regulation effectively meaningless. Hugh Laurie plays Major de Coverley, the squadron executive officer at the Pianosa Air Force Base. Noble and robust, he has his own way, using his time on horseshoes, listening to jazz on a phonograph, making his own martinis, and finding apartments for officers when they occupy new towns. George Clooney was originally cast as Colonel Cathcart, but he shifted to a supporting role as Scheisskopf, the training commander of the California Military Academy, in order to focus on directing and producing. Scheisskopf is a humorless, ambitious, yet incompetent tyrant filled with rage. During his time at the academy, he makes others feel as though they are in hell, but at heart, he is just a hot-headed fool, and thus would normally not be deployed to the front lines... however, he is indeed assigned as the operations officer in the local Mediterranean theater, thereby causing further suffering for the protagonist Yossarian. Other cast members include Giancarlo Giannini (as Marcello), Daniel David Stewart (Milo), Rafi Gavron (Aarfy), Austin Stowell (Nately), Graham Patrick Martin (Orr), Gerran Howell (Kid Sampson), Jon Rudnitsky (McWatt), Kevin J. O’Connor (Korn), Pico Alexander (Clevinger), Tessa Ferrer (Nurse Duckett), Lewis Pullman (Major Major), Josh Bolt (Dunbar), Jay Paulson (Chaplain), Julie Ann Emery (Marion), and Grant Heslov (Doc Daneeka).
