The story of "Battlestar Galactica" is set in a distant galaxy during a time known as "the Seventh Millennium." The humans on twelve colonies (planets) have been at war with a race of robots known as Cylons (translated in Hong Kong as "西朗星人") for a millennium, with the Cylons aiming to exterminate all humans. The Cylons suddenly request a peace treaty through a diplomatic channel from human delegate Count Baltar. The human leaders and fleet commanders become complacent and relaxed due to the Cylons' peace offer. All human warships, including twelve battlestars, are invited to ceasefire talks to finalize the peace agreement. However, this is a ruse—Baltar betrays humanity in pursuit of personal power and glory, and the Cylons do not genuinely plan for peace. Adama, commander of the Battlestar Galactica, grows suspicious of the Cylons' motives. He orders his two best pilots, his son Apollo and another, to conduct a formal patrol. Adama’s other son, Zac, convinces the second pilot to let him go along. During the patrol, they discover many hidden Cylon fighter squadrons, and they are detected. The Cylons disrupt the communications of the patrol as they return to the Galactica. Zac’s fighter is hit and slows down, forcing Apollo to abandon him to warn the fleet. When Apollo returns to rescue him, Zac has already been killed by the Cylons. Despite the president's orders to restrain, Adama manages to get the Galactica battle-ready before the Cylon fighters attack, but the other battlestars cannot. As a result, most of the fleet is ambushed and annihilated. During the war, Apollo informs Adama that he discovered Cylon fighters equipped with fuel tanks. Adama realizes their purpose is to extend the attack range of the Cylon basestars. He orders the Galactica to retreat to timely defend its home, Caprica. But it's too late; upon returning home, he finds only ruins ravaged by the Cylon basestars. Adama learns that all twelve colonies share the same fate. After destroying humanity's colonies, the basestars proceed to the ceasefire talks location to annihilate the remaining battlestars. With the civilization of the colonies facing destruction, the Cylons continue their extermination of humanity. Adama calls for every capable spacecraft to escape before the Cylons arrive. The only hope is that the Galactica can protect the fleet for as long as possible so they can find the legendary thirteenth human colony—Earth. Perhaps Earth has the technology to defeat the Cylons. Legends and myths record that only the last nobles of Kobol know the location of this colony. The planet Kobol was abandoned long before humanity began its great exploration of outer space a thousand years ago. Assisting Adama in the search for Earth is Colonel Tigh, the executive officer of the Galactica, along with Apollo (Adama's remaining son), Starbuck, and Boomer, who lead a squadron of Viper pilots. The Cylon leaders contemptuously shelter a briefly useful traitor—Baltar—and decide to execute him. In the movie, Baltar is beheaded. However, in the TV series, the execution is paused to allow him to help the Cylons hunt down the remaining humans. The Galactica and the fleet of refugee ships get a brief respite around the vacation planet Carillon. However, the native Ovions actually intend to delay the humans so that the Cylons can gather forces to destroy the human fleet. The Ovions exploit this situation, kidnapping the crew and passengers of the refugee fleet for food. Apollo and Starbuck uncover this scheme while investigating the disappearance of their comrades. After rescuing the imprisoned crew, Apollo and Starbuck ignite buried Tylium deposits beneath the planet during a firefight with the Cylons. Meanwhile, the new council believes the Cylons have been left far behind, so they insist on seizing the opportunity to hold a celebration. The council arranges a party and awards banquet, requiring all fighter pilots to attend; one outspoken council member even demands no weapons be allowed, completely ignoring the Cylon threat. The Cylons believe that all the fighter pilots have attended the awards banquet on Carillon and launch a fighter attack on the Galactica in orbit. However, Adama and Tigh suspect this is a trap and arrange for ground crew to impersonate most of the fighter pilots. The real pilots remain on standby and successfully repel the Cylon attack. Once again, Apollo knows that the Cylon fighters cannot venture far without supply ships. Apollo and Starbuck set out to hunt these other ships and discover a Cylon basestar on the far side of Carillon. Defying Commander Adama’s return order, Apollo and Starbuck decide to try to destroy it to allow the refugee fleet to escape. They use radio communications to trick the Cylons into thinking that at least six Viper squadrons are about to attack. The Cylon basestar descends into Carillon's atmosphere to avoid detection and is destroyed along with Carillon when the firestorm erupts. Despite achieving victory, humanity realizes that the Cylons will continue to pursue them, so they embark on their "lonely quest to find a shining planet called Earth."
