Idi Amin Dada, the controversial ruler of Uganda in the 1970s. He led a military coup in 1971 and actively sought to expand abroad while implementing a repressive regime at home, eliminating opposition. A series of dictatorial tactics made him notorious internationally. To restore his reputation, Amin invited a French documentary crew to film his daily activities. Director Barbet Schroeder did not turn the film into a glorifying tribute; instead, he edited out long portions of Amin's speeches and focused more on his true character. The film caused a sensation upon its release but also angered Amin, who demanded that the crew re-edit the film and held French nationals in Uganda as hostages. This move shocked the world.
